GROUP CONDEMNS MASS SACK OF BOWEN STAFF

Bowen University Iwo,  State.

By: Tunmishe Alli

The Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights OSUN state chapter (CDWR)  has recently condemned the mass retrenchment of workers at Bowen University, Iwo.  This mass retrenchment of  127 workers as not only insensitive but wicked and anti economic.

This was contained in  a statement signed by the state coordinator of the the  group Mr kola Ibrahim and made available to newsmen.

The group  now  use the medium to call for the immediate recall of affected workers, back to work. The group also  call on labour unions in the state to rise in defence of the affected workers.

The management of the institution explained that , institution was run as a public institution not as private entity, and in order to run the institution as a private business, workers have to be sacrificed.

The excuse adduced by the management of the institution are unjustified

Meanwhile, the institution authorities has refused to explain whether the workers are performing their functions or not. The affected workers were not reported to have committed any offence other than being workers under an insensitive management, And this has not been extended to top officials of the university, who earn huge salary.
"Worse still, the mass sack of workers at Bowen University, which mirrors similar sack across many private companies, shows the irresponsibility of Nigerian government, especially at this critical time. While the Nigerian government pretends to wanting to protect jobs in this Covid-19 crisis period, it looks the other way when workers are sacked. It is also unfortunate that leadership of labour unions prefer cosy relationship with employers under the guise of collective industrial harmony, even while workers are facing their biggest attacks in terms of mass sack, cut in wages and exploitation, both in the public and private sectors.

We now call on the labour unions, especially the education sector unions, NLC, TUC and ULC to rise in defence of these Bowen workers and others who are being sacked or exploited across the state and the country.

The group now call for a solidarity picketing of Bowen University, among other peaceful mass actions,We also call on labour movement to have a holistic plan of defending workers at workplaces and factories who are going be made sacrificial lambs by employers in this Covid-19 era. We in the CDWR are ready to join the Bowen workers to fight this injustice.

Vinicius, who had proved decisive in Madrid’s win over Real Valladolid on Wednesday, looked set to see off Levante as well, before Benzema notched his first goal of the season late on. Madrid have now recorded three clean sheets from their four opening games, although a draw away at Real Sociedad has given an early advantage to Barcelona, who play away at Sevilla later on Sunday. “We had to suffer,” said Zinedine Zidane. “We had chances in the second half to kill the game and that would have made it different. We suffered a lot because they also had chances.” Madrid and Barca had earlier played out the first ever women’s Clasico after Madrid finally launched their female team this season. Yet Barcelona showed their superiority in a 4-0 rout. But the men’s team have become something of a defensive juggernaut under Zidane after their solidity and resilience formed...
