UNITED STATES PLACES VISA BAN ON ELECTION RIGGERS IN NIGERIA

In a statement on Monday, Mike Pompeo, secretary of state, said actions have also been taken against some persons in the run-up to the September and October 2020 governorship elections in Edo and Ondo.

The identities of those affected by the ban were not disclosed.

“In July 2019, we announced the imposition of visa restrictions on Nigerians who undermined the February and March 2019 elections. Today, the Secretary of State is imposing additional visa restrictions on individuals for their actions surrounding the November 2019 Kogi and Bayelsa State elections and in the run up to the September and October 2020 Edo and Ondo State elections,” the statement read.

These individuals have so far operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and have undermined democratic principles.

“The Department of State emphasises that the actions announced today are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people. This decision reflects the Department of State’s commitment to working with the Nigerian government to realise its expressed commitment to end corruption and strengthen democracy, accountability, and respect for human rights.”

The US said it remained a steadfast supporter of Nigerian democracy and commended all those Nigerians who participated in elections throughout 2019 and have worked to strengthen democratic institutions and processes.

DRAMA AS NDDC WALKS OUT ON LAWMAKERS

By: Agosu Omoleye T he Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has walked out on lawmakers at an investigative hearing put together by the House of Representatives.  The Commission on Thursday refused to make presentations before the House Committee on NDDC. According to the acting managing director of the NDDC, Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, the Commission cannot partake an investigative hearing which is being presided over by the chairman of the committee who has been accused by the NDDC of hijacking the Commission’s projects. Professor Pondei was of the opinion that the NDDC will not get a fair hearing. COVID-19: EBONYI STATE GOVERNOR TESTS NEGATIVE, EXPEESSES GRATITUDE TO GOD FOR RECOVERY

He disclosed that his daughter and three of his close aides also tested negative for the virus. The governor thanked God for his recovery and the people of the state for their prayers and support. This comes four weeks after they were infected by COVID-19. On July 4, Governor Umahi announced that he, his daughter and aides tested positive after carrying out the test. Although he said they were not showing any symptoms, he, however, said they went into isolation in line with protocols laid down by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He, therefore, directed the Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe, to take over the frontline coordination of the state’s fight against the pandemic to protect Ebonyi people.
